DoL Launches campaign to reduce summer fatalities

The Department of Labour recently launched a campaign called “The Grim Harvest”.  The campaign focuses on those at increased risk of a workplace fatality during the Summer months, mainly those involved in the agriculture, construction and forestry sectors.  However, there are lessons we can all learn about staying safe during the summer months while at work.

Stay hydrated.  Dehydration can lead to fatigue and reduced concentration, which can in turn lead to accidents.

If you work outdoors wear sunscreen.  Protect your skin from the effects of the sun by wearing sunscreen, even if you are just out for a quick walk during your lunch break, or working for long hours under the sun.

If you work outdoors wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun.  Exposure to your sun could lead to heat fatigue or even heat stroke.

Keep active.  If you sit for long periods at your desk, get up regularly and keep active, to reduce the risk of blood clots.  This is especially important if you have recently taken a long haul flight, where there could be an increased risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

If you drive for work, whether it is to get to work or as part of your job, stay safe.  Take regular breaks if you are on the road for along time.  Be aware of  the effects of the sun.  Five of the seven workplace deaths so far this year involved vehicles.

What can Health and Safety Reps do to help?
Do a workplace hazard identification taking in those summertime factors into account and calculate whether you are at an increased risk.  Then put measures in place to reduce the risk or eliminate the hazard.
