Jan Dunn HS Rep: Public Service Association (PSA) and Safeguard Finalist
Jan is a Debt Management Officer for the Ministry of Social Development Southern Collection Unit.
For the past 8 years, Jan has been their Health & Safety Co-ordinator and a Health & Safety Representative.
Coming from a Massage Therapy background, Jan has a passion for safe work practices and has been instrumental in iniating and co-ordinating a proactive wellness programme at her site.
This programme includes such things as Blood pressure, Melanoma, Hearing and Grip Strength tests along with flu injections,
inductions in Health & Safety and desk set ups. Jan also iniated an OSH home page that has links to the Ministry’s policies and procedures that staff can access easily, and she gives regular presentations on Health & Safety. Because of her background, her presentations mainly focus on muscular skeletal conditions and body awareness of pain. Jan also runs practical workshops in pain and discomfort management from time to time, and is there to help staff with early problems, through exercises, stretches and self massage as well as giving shoulder, neck and arm massages.
The wellness programme is extremely successful and popular, and well supported by management and staff, thereby making her workplace safe, through early intervention.
For the last two years, Jan has been involved in the Ministry’s internal Health & Safety site audits and was earlier this year a finalist in the National Safeguard Health & Safety Awards category “Most Influential Employee”
She has found that the Workplace Health & Safety training has been invaluable for investigating and reporting accidents/incidents and giving her good knowledge of the Health & Safety Act. This compliments her skills as a massage therapist thereby giving a holistic view to Health & Safety in her workplace.
